Fifty Years of Quality Auto Repair Work
Stan Lenssen founded Stan’s Auto Body on Jan. 19, 1971, with the goal of providing work that was a cut above the rest. The 21-year-old Stan had worked for two other auto body shops in the past and was disappointed by the poor quality of repairs he saw. As the reputation for his services grew, so did his business, and Stan’s Auto Body became a staple among Bellingham’s collision repair shops.
Keeping up With Technology & Processes
In 1973, Stan moved the business to its current location on State Street, where he joined an array of businesses in historic downtown Bellingham. Over the years, the exterior of Stan's Auto Body maintained the iconic feel of its early days, but the inside filled with state-of-the-art equipment used by experienced auto body technicians. The company continued putting out top-quality repairs for a loyal customer base.
Changes in Ownership; Consistent Core Values
In 2011, after putting 42 years into his business, Stan decided it was time to retire. It was extremely important to him that the new owner of Stan’s Auto Body was someone who shared his ideals and was a person he could trust, so he chose to sell it to Jeff Anderson. Following in Stan’s footsteps, Jeff built Stan’s into the modern business it is today. But a decade later he, too, decided it was his time to move on. On Sept. 1, 2022, he sold the shop to Derrick Brown and Diego Macareno.
Derrick and Diego were experienced in all roles of the shop and have brought that knowledge together to run Stan's Auto Body. Their goal is to continue to make Stan’s a respectable shop that delivers the highest quality repairs in a timely manner.
Meet the Owners of Stan’s Auto Body
Derrick Brown
Derrick Brown has been interested in cars his entire life. He started training in auto body work as a high school student, taking classes through Yakima Technical College. After graduating from tech school, he moved to Bellingham and worked at local auto body shops, performing all aspects of auto repair. That’s where he met Diego Macareno, and the two formed a friendship that has lasted for nearly two decades.
Derrick joined the team at Stan’s Auto Body in 2020 as head painter. When former owner Jeff Anderson decided to sell the shop, he approached Derrick about purchasing it. Derrick and Diego decided to buy the shop together, joining their experience and their new ideas.
When he’s not working in the shop, you’ll find Derrick enjoying outdoor activities like mountaineering, snowboarding, splitboarding, mountain biking, and riding his bike on local trails. He and his wife, Dani, have a son, Owen, and a golden retriever/collie mix named General. The four of them enjoy camping together and spending time in the woods as often as possible.
Diego Macareno
Diego Macareno’s love of cars goes back as far as he can remember. In high school, he took that love and began pursuing further education in auto body repair. Diego earned his auto body technician certification from WyoTech in Wyoming, and in the years since, his career has led him to working on classic cars, brand-new models, and everything in between.
Diego and his wife, Kristi, moved to Bellingham in 2005, where he began working at a local auto body shop and met Derrick. As co-owner of Stan’s Auto Body, Diego brings years of shop management experience, striving to provide thorough estimates and quality repairs for this community.
Diego and Kristi have a daughter, Nora, and a cavachon mix named Wilson. Their family enjoys spending time outside, playing games, and biking.
