Is It Worth Fixing Small Dents & Scratches? Here’s When to Do It.

Small dents often appear when you least expect them. Whether it’s a door ding from someone who parked too close or a series of dimples from a hail storm, a dent can range from a minor annoyance to an unsightly blemish on your car’s appearance.

Sometimes it’s difficult to know whether it’s worth fixing. If the vehicle still drives just fine, can you live without it? At Stan’s Auto Body, we recommend being proactive and getting a fix from a trained professional. But we also know that cost, the age of the vehicle, and severity all play a role in your decision.

Here’s a closer look at how to decide whether it’s time for a repair.

Why It’s Important to Be Proactive With Dents

That small dent may not seem like much, but letting it go will allow it to worsen over time. Depending on the incident that caused it, it could also be hiding a more serious issue. Here’s why we recommend getting dents checked out by an auto body professional sooner rather than later.

It Could Be Hiding Structural Damage

Your car may still drive just fine. But the dent could be a sign that something isn’t right underneath. This is especially true if you were in an accident. In these cases, it’s best not to let structural issues go undetected until they get worse.

It Prevents Rust & Further Damage

When a dent breaks the paint, that means the exposed metal is now vulnerable to moisture, which can lead to rust. What starts as a small dent can quickly become a much larger, more expensive rust repair.

It Keeps Your Resale Value Up

The exact impact that a dent has on your car’s resale value will depend on how large it is and where it is. But even small dents detract from the value of your vehicle. If you’re looking to sell it soon or just want to keep it looking nice, it’s best to be proactive.

It Enhances Your Car’s Aesthetics

Want to keep that just-off-the-lot shine on your vehicle? Professional auto body repair shops can often fix dents to the point that you can’t notice that anything happened at all.

Can I Fix My Car Dent Myself?

Google “how to repair a car dent,” and you’ll see countless articles and videos showing DIY methods like plungers, websites selling dent fixing kits, and other advice. They can work, but the most reliable way to fix the dent is to hire a professional.

Auto repair shops like Stan’s have specialized equipment to properly diagnose and fix the issue so your car looks like new. This also allows us to determine whether the dent is hiding other issues that aren’t visible on the exterior. We also guarantee our work, which means if we don’t do something right, we’ll fix it at no cost to you.

  • Repair Appointment. Once the estimate is complete, we’ll work to get you in quickly. We use the latest auto repair techniques, such as paintless dent repair, which is a more efficient, lower-cost way of quickly removing minor dings.
  • Workmanship Warranty. We provide a full warranty on our labor, giving you peace of mind that your car stays in proper working order.

Will My Car Insurance Cover Minor Dent Repairs?

This is a very common question, and the answer will depend on your type of insurance and individual policy.

  • Collision coverage may cover scratches and dents caused by a car accident.
  • Comprehensive coverage may cover non-collision dents that are due to certain events, like a natural disaster.
  • You may also be able to opt into an endorsement for cosmetic damage that will cover dents from more events.

How to Decide When to Get a Repair

At Stan’s Auto Body, we’re happy to assess damage for any type of dent to provide an estimate and advice on whether to fix it. When and how to fix it will ultimately be up to you, but here’s a quick guide to help you decide:

  • Was the dent sustained in an accident? Did it break the paint or reveal metal? You should bring it in immediately to avoid further issues.
  • Is the dent shallow and didn’t break the paint? Or, is it a minor, cosmetic dent on an older car? These fixes are not as critical. However, with all the technology and monitors on newer vehicles, even if it’s a cosmetic dent — especially to an area where the monitors are located — we recommend having it checked to maintain correct readings.

If you’ve sustained a small dent, it’s a good idea to bring it in for a free inspection. We offer free walk-in damage estimates Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Have questions? Contact us to start the process.
